Liquid Glass Spray Could Lessen Need For Cleaning Products.
The UK's Telegraph (2/1, Collins) reported on a "liquid glass" spray, developed by German company Nanopool, "which forms an easy-clean coating one millionth of a millimetre thick" that "can be applied to virtually any surface to protect it against water, dirt, bacteria, heat and UV radiation." The product is primarily silicon dioxide, and the "key" to its "versatility is the fact it can be sold in a solution of either alcohol or water, depending on what surface needs to be coated." As the material requires only water in order to be cleaned, it could lessen the need for "a variety of cleaning products."
Popular Science (2/2, Dillow) reports that Nanopool "still has some proving out to do before we'd recommend coating the entire globe in a cleanable, wipeable layer of glass several hundred times thinner than a human hair, but the range of possibilities is a bit mind-blowing. Companies from train car manufacturers to clothing designers to food and beverage producers are looking into ways to leverage the material's unique properties."
