By 2050, one Quarter Of Global Electricity Could Come From Solar, IEA Reports.
The Los Angeles Times (5/13, Hsu) reports, "By 2050, the world could be getting a quarter of its electricity from solar power," according to the International Energy Agency, which yesterday released "two 'roadmaps' for photovoltaics technology and concentrating solar power." The IEA also "recommends that governments establish long-term targets and policies around the technology to encourage investments and installations. Incentives and financing schemes...would also help." Currently, only a handful of countries have photovoltaics systems with capabilities of "more than 1 gigawatt," but a number of countries are expanding their solar power investments. "In many regions by 2020, power from photovoltaics is expected to be about as cheap as electricity from existing sources – a pricing point known as grid parity."
